The Sutphen Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Company came about in 1890 as a dream of C.H. Sutphen. His son, Harry, eventually took an interest into the business and carried it on until his death. Harry's two sons, Thomas and Robert Sutphen, also took interest in the business after World War II. Thomas and Robert's own previous involvement in the business urged their decision to develop their family owned business. As a result, they gained a remarkable amount of experience and job responsibility over the years. Robert became the Chairman of the Board of the company, and Thomas became the President of the Company.
The Sutphen Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Industry has been a family owned business for over 116 years, making it one of the oldest owned and operated fire apparatus manufacturing facilities in the United States. The males of the Sutphen family have all continued an interest in the company. The business has never been owned or operated by anyone other than a family member of its founder, C.H. Sutphen. The Sutphen Apparatus Manufacturing Plant has made many different models of fire appratus over the last 116 years, and continue to go strong today with some of their newest models of fire apparatus.
